About the project
The Mundaring Arts Centre Inc., in partnership with the Shire of Mundaring runs an annual Environmental Art Project (EAP). The project invites primary school and homeschool students in the Shire of Mundaring and the City of Swan to explore local environmental challenges, while creating a meaningful artwork that advocates for the protection of our ecosystems.
The project features:
- Environmental drawing competition for primary school students
- Exhibition of entries and a people's choice vote
- Selected designs installed as banners in the Mundaring Town Centre.
Environmental Art Project 2026 'Forest Forage'
An understanding of the natural world is a source of not only great curiosity, but great fulfilment... It’s surely our responsibility to do everything within our power to create a planet that provides a home not just for us, but for all life on Earth.”
– Sir David Attenborough
In 2026, students are encouraged to investigate how plants and animals rely on one another and create a unique A4-sized portrait artwork promoting what we can all do in our local area to make a difference. This project provides students with an opportunity to delve into key environmental topics and share their ideas on forest foraging.
To support their learning, schools can access an Education Resource Pack, and benefit from school visits, as well as artist-led workshops. These resources are designed to inspire students to become the changemakers of tomorrow.
All student submissions are showcased in an exhibition at the Midland Junction Arts Centre and shared online. Winning pieces are chosen for public display, in the Mundaring town centre.
Key environmental themes
- Wildlife – Who eats who, or what, and when? How can we help all animals maintain access to their natural food sources all year round?
- Local plants – How do local plants provide different food options across different seasons? Which animals do these plants support?
- Safe water sources for animals – How can we look after our waterways, and help animals over the drier months? What do different animals need to safely access a watersource?
