Reducing bushfire risk across our Hills Communities

The Shire of Mundaring has secured State Government funding to carry out bushfire mitigation works in several local reserves and verges over the next 12 months.

The works aim to make our Hills Communities safer by reducing fuel loads, improving access for fire crews, emergency egress for residents and helping protect homes, schools and community spaces.

Shire President Paige McNeil said the program is part of a long-term approach to manage bushfire risk across the Shire.

“The majority of the Shire of Mundaring is bushfire prone, so it’s critical that we prepare well before summer. Reducing fuel loads and ensuring our volunteer brigades have clear access to respond are vital steps in helping to keep our community safe,” she said.

“Council is grateful to the State Government for supporting this proactive work through bushfire mitigation funding.”

Work will start in August and run through to June 2026. Areas include Darlington, Chidlow, Mt Helena, Glen Forrest, Hovea, Stoneville, Sawyers Valley and Mundaring.

Treatments will include slashing, mulching, chemical application and firebreak maintenance. Some areas may require traffic management during works.

Properties within 150 metres of a reserve scheduled for works have been notified by letter. Signage is also placed at work sites, and where relevant, local Friends groups are consulted through the Shire’s Community Landcare Officer.

Residents can follow the progress of works in their area and sign up for updates through the Shire’s Engage Mundaring web platform at Shire of Mundaring | Bushfire Mitigation Works.
