Shire of Mundaring has formally withdrawn from the Eastern Metropolitan Regional Council (EMRC), effective 30 June 2025, concluding a valued 39-year partnership.
Originally decided by Council in December 2024 and reaffirmed at a Special Council Meeting on 11 June 2025, the withdrawal supports the Shire’s long-term commitment to divert waste from landfill and deliver more sustainable waste services.
Importantly, for our community, all waste collection services across the Shire will continue to operate as usual.
Shire President Paige McNeil assured residents that the decision was strategically and financially prudent and considered the implications of other Councils' withdrawal.
“Our community can be confident that Council’s decision was made with careful consideration of our long-term waste strategy and broader financial risks, ensuring we are well-positioned to advance more sustainable waste management services,” she said.
An independent assessment will determine the return of the Shire’s equity in the EMRC, as of 30 June 2025, with payment due by 30 June 2027, in accordance with the Establishment Agreement.
While no longer a member, the Shire will continue to engage with the EMRC as a customer where mutual benefit exists.
Shire of Mundaring acknowledges the important role the EMRC has played in supporting waste services for the community over nearly four decades and extends its best wishes to the EMRC for continued success in its future endeavours.
The Shire of Mundaring remains committed to delivering efficient and environmentally responsible waste services, supporting a cleaner and more sustainable future for our community.
