With the increasing environmental impact of waste and a shortage of landfill space in WA predicted by 2050 it is imperative that we transition from landfill reliance toward resource recovery, recycling, and circular economy initiatives.
Better Bins Plus
Better Bins Plus programs supports a headline commitment in the Waste Strategy to roll out a consistent three‑bin kerbside collection system, which includes separation of FOGO from other waste categories, by all local governments in the Perth and Peel regions by 2025.
The Shire of Mundaring participated in the Better Bins Plus: Go FOGO program, implementing the three‑bin kerbside collection system in 2024.
Waste hierarchy
The waste hierarchy is a simple way to understand the best ways to manage waste. It ranks waste management options in order of what is generally best for the environment. Avoiding waste in the first place is the most preferred option.
Resource recovery helps recover value from materials and can reduce the environmental impacts of extracting and processing new raw materials. Energy recovery is the least preferred form of recovery. Overall, disposal is the least preferred option because it recovers the least value from materials and has the most impact on the environment.
It is important that the Shire of Mundaring and our community embrace the waste hierarchy by thinking first about avoiding waste, then recovering resources, and using disposal only as a last resort. By doing this, we can help protect the environment and play our part in achieving Western Australia’s vision of a sustainable, low-waste, circular economy where human health and the environment are protected from the impacts of waste.

GREAT Sorts campaign
The GREAT Sorts campaign features five characters which each promote a different waste sorting behaviours which is essential to reducing waste and transition to a circular economy. We should all try and be GREAT Sorts, and leave landfill is the last resort.
