Nine young Aboriginal women from Swan View Senior High School’s Stars Foundation recently attended the Aboriginal Youth Standing Strong NAIDOC Youth Ball 2025, held at Optus Stadium.

The event was proudly supported by the Shire of Mundaring’s Midvale Hub Youth Services team, Sophia, Julia and Sam, who worked alongside the Stars Foundation to make the evening possible.

The idea for this celebration began with members of the Shire’s Aboriginal Reference Group (formerly the Reconciliation Action Plan group). With encouragement from the group, the Shire’s Youth and Aboriginal Engagement Coordinator, Sophia Davies, helped bring the vision to life.

In the lead-up to the event, more than 50 dresses were donated by over 30 generous community members. Six volunteer stylists also gave their time to provide hair and makeup support.

The girls spent weeks preparing together, choosing dresses, sharing stories and building confidence before celebrating culture, identity and community at the ball. For many, it was their first formal event and a chance to feel proud of who they are.

Shire President Paige McNeil said the initiative reflected the power of community working together to create meaningful opportunities for young people.

“Council are proud of the work our Midvale Hub Youth Services team and thank our volunteers from the Aboriginal Reference Group for bringing this idea to life,” she said. “Their collaboration a created a special memory for our young Aboriginal women.”

President McNeil said the event represented more than one night of celebration.

“As a Shire, we’re committed to continuing this journey of reconciliation, empowerment and connection. Events like this strengthen relationships between generations and celebrate the richness of Aboriginal culture that is such an important part of our community’s story.”

The impact of the event reached well beyond the evening itself. The way the community came together, from donating dresses to volunteering time and skills, showed how small acts of kindness can help young people see their own value and potential.

Shire of Mundaring extends its thanks to everyone who contributed to this special occasion, and to the young women whose confidence and pride continue to inspire those around them.
