As cooler weather continues across the Perth Hills, Shire of Mundaring is reminding residents to take care when burning garden refuse and to minimise smoke impacts on neighbours and the wider community.
Smoke can be dangerous for people with existing respiratory conditions, particularly older people, young children and those with asthma or other breathing difficulties.
If you are planning to burn off, it is important to manage your fire responsibly and reduce smoke wherever possible.
Tips for safer and cleaner burning
Before lighting a fire:
- Check weather conditions and avoid burning during high winds.
- Do not burn garden refuse that is green or wet from recent rain. Wet material creates excessive smoke due to incomplete combustion.
- Do not burn plastics, rubber, metal or household waste.
When burning:
- Make sure garden refuse is dry, so it burns hot and clean with little or no smoke.
- Do not allow fires to smoulder. A hot fire with a strong flame produces less smoke.
- Always attend the fire and ensure all safety precautions are in place.
- Be considerate and let neighbours know if you are planning to burn.
Residents are also encouraged to consider alternatives to burning, including mulching or composting garden waste.
Garden waste can also be disposed of at the Shire’s Waste Transfer Stations located on Coppin Road, Mundaring and Mathieson Road, Chidlow.
