The spirit of connection and celebration was on full display at NAIDOC Midland on Monday 7 October, where the Midvale Hub team joined hundreds of locals to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, community and creativity.
Families stopped by to take part in hands-on activities, enjoy water play, and learn more about the many programs available through Shire of Mundaring’s Midvale Hub.
Parents and caregivers had the chance to speak with staff about upcoming parenting programs, playgroups and youth activities, while children explored a range of creative workshops.
A highlight of the day was the collaborative community mural, where children painted gum leaves and added colourful handprints featuring words and values that mattered most to them, a joyful display of unity and imagination.
The team also welcomed kindergarten children from the Midvale Early Childhood and Parenting Centre, who visited on a special excursion to take part in the cultural activities and experience the energy of the event.
Midvale Hub staff connected with more than 180 local families and residents, sharing information about services such as low-cost childcare, youth programs and family support offered through the Indigenous Advancement Strategy team and the Child and Parent Centres.
To end the day on a cheerful note, a community raffle brought big smiles to one lucky Midvale family, who took home a backpack filled with exciting goodies.
Shire President Paige McNeil said the event was a wonderful reminder of the power of connection and the importance of celebrating diversity within the community.
“NAIDOC Midland is a celebration of culture, family and community spirit,” President McNeil said. “It’s inspiring to see so many people come together to share stories, learn from one another and celebrate the rich cultural heritage of the Whadjuk Noongar people.
“The Shire values opportunities to connect with our community in such meaningful ways and to recognise the strength of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.”
Shire of Mundaring proudly acknowledges the Whadjuk people of the Noongar Nation as the traditional custodians of this land, and pays respect to Elders past, present and emerging.
