More than 50 community members have taken part in a series of hands-on cooking workshops hosted by the Shire of Mundaring, exploring seasonal produce, plant-based recipes, induction cooking and simple ways to reduce food waste at home.
Held across April, May and June, the three workshops were facilitated by Nicole Ingram and the team from Grow Cook Eat WA. Participants learned practical tips to make the most of ingredients, reduce food waste and build confidence in the kitchen before cooking and sharing a meal together.
Induction cooking was a key focus of the Flavours of Fall and Winter Warmers sessions. Participants had the opportunity to try induction cooktops, test compatible cookware and learn how to troubleshoot common issues.
Unlike gas or traditional electric stovetops, induction cooktops heat cookware directly using electromagnetic energy. This allows for faster and more precise temperature control, improved energy efficiency and benefits for indoor air quality.
Many participants said the workshops helped them better understand how induction cooking works and how it could fit into their own homes.
One attendee said the session was “a real eye-opener” and they were “amazed at how quickly food cooks”.
The workshops also created an opportunity for residents to connect over a shared love of good food, healthy eating and sustainable living.
“It was a great way to learn with others while meeting people in the community and sharing some lovely, healthy food together,” another attendee said.
“Staying to help with the washing up was a lovely social experience too.”
The workshops form part of the Shire’s ongoing environmental sustainability events program, which supports the community to take practical action for a more sustainable future.
Events held so far this year have covered topics including nature and wildlife, habitats and native plants, gardening, water conservation, energy efficiency, electrification and waste avoidance.
Together, these events help build knowledge, inspire everyday action and support a more sustainable and resilient community in the heart of the Perth Hills.
Community members interested in future sustainability workshops and events are encouraged to visit the Shire’s events calendar for upcoming opportunities.
