Community insights shaping Mundaring’s future

Hundreds of residents have had their say on how the Shire communicates, engages and manages waste in the latest MARKYT Community Pulse Survey, and their feedback is helping shape what happens next.

More than 570 community members took part in the August 2025 survey, sharing where they believe the Shire should focus its efforts.

The results show a community that’s engaged, informed and passionate.

Residents told us they’re most interested in updates about local projects, emergency information and planning matters, and they prefer to stay informed through e-newsletters (52%), social media (47%) and SMS alerts (35%).

Shire President Paige McNeil said Council’s decision to include waste services in this round of community feedback reflected a growing focus on sustainability and local challenges.

“Earlier this year I brought forward a Notice of Motion to include waste services in the Community Pulse survey because Council want to hear directly from residents about what’s working and where we can do better,” President McNeil said.

“It’s encouraging to see that almost every household knows about FOGO and most are using it effectively. At the same time, the results show there are opportunities to increase awareness about what belongs in each bin, and to make sure the system works for everyone, especially those living in our rural areas, where collection options and access can be more complex.

“This feedback gives Council a clear picture of community expectations and helps us explore alternative models or pilot initiatives that might better suit the needs of our rural region.”

The results also highlight strong support for sustainability initiatives. Many residents expressed pride in the Shire’s Food Organics Garden Organics (FOGO) program and interest in learning more about waste reduction and recycling.

CEO Jason Whiteaker said the insights help the Shire plan for the future.

“Every survey gives us a better picture of how people experience their community,” Mr Whiteaker said. “These results will help us keep improving services and engagement right across the shire.”

The next opportunity to have your say is coming soon. The MARKYT Community Scorecard opens on Monday 3 November 2025, inviting everyone to share their views on how the Shire can best serve the community in years ahead.

You’ll be able to complete the survey on the Shire website, social media or pick up a hard copy at the Administration Building or libraries.

“If you love where you live, now’s the time to get involved and tell us what matters most to you,” President McNeil said.
