At its meeting on Tuesday 12 August 2025, Council considered a report on the expansion of ALCOA’s mining and exploration lease. Council unanimously resolved to oppose exploration and mining in the Northern Jarrah Forest and request ALCOA to voluntarily excise the Mundaring Weir Catchment area from their exploration drilling program.
The decision follows significant community concerns about potential impacts on water quality, biodiversity, and the shire’s natural landscapes which include the world’s only jarrah forest.
Letters outlining Council’s position will be sent to the Minister for Mines and Petroleum, the Minister for Water, the Minister for Environment, Member for Kalamunda and ALCOA, alongside the preparation of a submission to the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA).
Shire President Paige McNeil said the decision reflected the community’s strong stance on safeguarding local water and the environment.
“Our community told us that the health of our water catchment and the unique environment of the Perth Hills must be protected for future generations. Our community is not willing to accept exploration drilling that could lead to the mining of our unique jarrah forest that provides crucial breeding habitat for endangered black cockatoos.” Shire President McNeil said.
“Council’s decision reflects our responsibility to safeguard our environment now and into the future and to advocate strongly on behalf of our residents. We thank all community members and environmental groups who contributed their views, and we will continue to work with State Government to ensure these values are upheld.”
This resolution reinforces Council’s commitment to protect the environment, preserve water security, and respond to the priorities of our community. Shire of Mundaring will continue to advocate for outcomes that honour our shared vision as the place for sustainable living.
