Local honours recipients recognised in King's Birthday Honours

Former Shire of Mundaring Councillor Colin James and local resident Emeritus Professor Mark Bush have been recognised in the 2026 King's Birthday Honours for their outstanding contributions to their professions and the community.

Mr James received the Australia Fire Service Medal (AFSM) for distinguished service as a member of an Australian fire service, recognising more than four decades of volunteer service in emergency management, bushfire preparedness and community safety.

Mr James began volunteering with the Darlington Bush Fire Brigade in 1980 and has held numerous leadership positions throughout his service, including captain and lieutenant. He remains an active member of the brigade's Fire Support Group.

Since 1998, he has also volunteered with the Department of Fire and Emergency Services Air Operations Team, playing a critical role in coordinating helicopter and aircraft operations during major emergencies across Western Australia and interstate.

In 1996, Mr James established Darlington's Bushfire Ready Group and has since dedicated countless hours to improving local preparedness through education, recruitment and community engagement.

His service has extended well beyond Western Australia. During the 2019 Black Summer bushfires, Mr James deployed to New South Wales where he supported aerial firefighting operations under challenging conditions, helping ensure aircraft could quickly return to the fireground to protect lives and property.

Emeritus Professor Mark Bush was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for significant service to engineering, tertiary education and the community. His distinguished career has included leadership roles at The University of Western Australia, Engineers Australia and numerous research and professional organisations.

Professor Bush has also made a significant contribution to the local community through his long-standing involvement with the Parkerville Volunteer Bushfire Brigade, where he has volunteered since 2013 and continues to serve as a Lieutenant and Fire School Trainer.

Shire President Paige McNeil said both recipients exemplified the spirit of service that helps make the Perth Hills such a strong and connected community.

"Colin and Mark have each dedicated decades of their lives to serving others, whether through emergency management, education, engineering or community leadership," President McNeil said.

"Their achievements reflect an extraordinary commitment to making a positive difference, and we are proud to see their contributions recognised at a national level."

"On behalf of Council and our community, I congratulate both Colin and Mark on these well-deserved honours and thank them for their outstanding service."

President McNeil said the recognition highlighted the important role local volunteers and community leaders play in shaping and supporting communities across Australia.

"These honours recognise not only individual achievement, but also the values of service, leadership and community spirit that continue to strengthen our community."
