New Changing Place opens the door to greater inclusion at Bilgoman Aquatic Centre

A major accessibility upgrade at Bilgoman Aquatic Centre is helping more people in our community enjoy days out at the pool with dignity, comfort and confidence.

The new accredited Changing Place gives residents and visitors with high support needs access to a safe, private and fully equipped bathroom and changing facility, making the centre more inclusive for families who have previously faced barriers to participation.

The facility includes an adult-sized change table, ceiling hoist, shower and toilet in a larger purpose-built space that meets national Changing Places standards. It will be open during all summer operating hours and available on request during winter.

The equipment is designed to be used by a trained carer, and visitors can bring their own sling to ensure the safest and most comfortable experience.

With Bilgoman now added to the national Changing Places database, people who rely on these facilities can confidently plan outings, knowing support is available whether they are visiting the pool or simply passing through the area. The upgrade strengthens accessible infrastructure across the shire, joining the existing Changing Place at The Lakes and complementing facilities in neighbouring areas.

Shire of Mundaring President Paige McNeil said the upgrade reinforces the Shire’s commitment to creating welcoming accessible places for everyone.

“Public spaces matter most when everyone can use them,” President McNeil said.

“For families who need specialised facilities, the lack of a suitable bathroom can mean the difference between taking part in community life and staying home.

“This new Changing Place at Bilgoman opens more opportunities for people with disability and their carers to enjoy everything our local pool offers. It reflects our vision for a connected, inclusive community where everyone feels they belong.”
