Planning for the future of our Hills community

Shire of Mundaring is planning for the future of our community, with a clear focus on protecting what makes the Perth Hills such a special place to live.

As Perth continues to grow, long-term planning is underway across the north-east sub-region to guide how land is used, how infrastructure is delivered, and how communities stay connected. This work looks ahead to a growing population while ensuring local areas retain their identity and liveability.

For the Shire, this is about taking a local approach that balances thoughtful growth with the lifestyle, environment and character our community values.

Over the coming months, the Shire will review its Local Planning Strategy and Local Planning Scheme. These key documents guide how land is used locally and help ensure our planning remains up to date and aligned with both community priorities and State planning.

A key part of this work is identifying where sensible, well-located growth can be supported within existing townsites. This means making the most of areas that already have access to infrastructure, services and transport, while maintaining the look, feel and amenity of our Hills communities.

Protecting the natural environment remains a priority. The Shire is home to significant bushland, water catchments and biodiversity corridors. These areas require careful planning and strong protections. Future planning will also respond to local conditions, including bushfire risk and servicing constraints.

The review will also strengthen how we connect people to services, community facilities and employment opportunities, both within the Shire and across the broader region.

Keep an eye out for updates as this work progresses, including how you can have your say. You can stay informed by following the Shire’s social media channels, newsletters and other updates.

This work will help shape how the Shire of Mundaring grows over time, while protecting its unique character, environment and lifestyle.
