As the wetter part of the year has commenced, rabbit breeding activity is increasing.
Releasing Rabbit Haemorrhagic Disease Virus (RHDV), also known as Calicivirus, at this time is not recommended. When the virus is released during breeding periods, it can increase immunity in the rabbit population rather than reduce numbers, making future control efforts less effective.
For effective rabbit control, RHDV releases should only occur at least one month after the final seasonal rains. Release timing is typically from late November through to late March, depending on seasonal conditions.
Landholders are encouraged to delay any planned RHDV releases until conditions are suitable.
