Shire of Mundaring Art Collection Survey – celebrating 40 years of creative practice

Mundaring Arts Centre Inc. invites audiences to explore forty years of artistic practice in the Perth Hills with Marks for Mundaring, a survey exhibition celebrating the Shire of Mundaring Art Collection.

Since acquiring its first artwork in 1986, the Shire of Mundaring has supported local artists through its annual acquisition exhibition, presented in partnership with Mundaring Arts Centre. Over four decades, this initiative has grown into a significant cultural archive, documenting how generations of artists have responded to, and been inspired by this unique region.

Shire President Paige McNeil said the exhibition reflects a long-standing partnership and a strong sense of community pride.

“I’m proud to open Marks for Mundaring and celebrate 40 years of partnership between the Shire of Mundaring and Mundaring Arts Centre,” she said.

“It’s been a pleasure to meet the artists behind these works and to recognise the important role they play in shaping our local identity.

“What makes this collection so special is that it belongs to our community. These works are not hidden away. They line the walls of our Shire buildings and libraries and are shared and enjoyed by our community every day.”

The hills have long provided a haven for artists drawn to the landscape for its wealth of inspiration. In the bush they found quiet contemplation, land on which to build studios and workshops, and a like-minded creative community.

Sharing their skills, ideologies and creative spaces led to long-lasting collective enterprises like the formation of the Shire Art Collection, Mundaring Community Sculpture Park, Mundaring Arts Centre and innumerable art collectives.

Through their documentation of the environmental and cultural world around them, these artists established the hills as a creative hotspot in Perth— one that continues to attract artists to this day.

Marks for Mundaring presents works acquired for the Shire’s Art Collection between 1986 and 2026 that reflect this enduring relationship between artists and place. Iconic landmarks appear in Robert Juniper’s Mundaring Weir and Trevor Woodward’s Chidlow’s Lake, while works such as Olga Cironis’ Take all that belongs to you and run and Norma MacDonald’s Colliding Cultures speak to stories of migration, settlement and belonging.

Throughout the exhibition there is a reverence for the natural environment. Depictions of flora and fauna, expansive ecological vistas and winding waterways pervade the artworks. At times critical but grounded in admiration, these works champion the landscape that shaped them – testament to the profound influence “the hills” have had on local creative practice.

Featured artists include Hans Arkeveld, Mac Betts, Robert Birch, Elizabeth Blair Barber, Tjyllyungoo Lance Chadd, Olga Cironis, Madeleine Clear, Nicholas Compton, Stuart Elliott, Sarah Elson, David Gregson, Guy Grey Smith, Marie Haass, George Haynes, Nigel Hewitt, Michelle Hogan, Ben Joel, Joan Johnson, Rosemary Johnston, Bec Juniper, Robert Juniper, Judy Kotai, Bethamy Linton, James W.R. Linton, André Lipscombe, Peggy Lyon, Norma MacDonald, Jenny Mills, Antony Muia, Philippa O’Brien, Nalda Searles, Sue Starcken, Linda van der Merwe, Katrina Virgona, Richard Woldendorp and Trevor Woodward.
