Shire of Mundaring welcomes Alcoa Australia’s decision to remove areas within the shire from its proposed exploration drilling plans in the northern jarrah forest.

Alcoa announced that, following community and stakeholder feedback, potential future exploration areas identified within the Shire of Mundaring will no longer be included in its Mining and Management Plans. These changes will be reflected through an amendment to Alcoa’s current 2023–2027 Mining and Management Plan proposal and by updating the forthcoming 2025–2029 plan.

Shire President Paige McNeil said the announcement reflects the strength of community concern and the shared commitment to protecting the world’s only jarrah forest.

“This is a significant win for our community and our environment,” President McNeil said.

“Thank you to all community members who made submissions. Residents across the shire have made it clear that exploration activity in the northern jarrah forest posed risks to our biodiverse environment and water security. I am very pleased Alcoa has listened to our concerns and changed its plans.”

President McNeil acknowledged the constructive engagement shown by Alcoa during recent discussions.

“We thank Alcoa for taking the time to listen to our community and for recognising the strong environmental values of the Perth Hills. Their environmentally responsibly decision demonstrates respect for those values and sets an important expectation for any future exploration or mining interests in our shire.”

The northern jarrah forest is central to the identity of the Perth Hills, supporting biodiversity, protecting water resources and Council has consistently advocated for the long-term protection of these landscapes.

“This outcome reinforces that strong community advocacy matters.”

The Shire’s advocacy does not end with this decision. While Alcoa has withdrawn its proposed exploration areas, other companies may seek access in the future. To safeguard our community and environment, the Shire has put forward a motion to the WA Local Government Association (WALGA) calling on the State Government to strengthen protections for the Perth Hills.

The motion asks the State to prohibit exploration and mining in designated water-catchment areas, and to recognise their importance for drinking water, biodiversity and community amenity. It also calls for early and genuine engagement with local governments in any future review of State Agreement Acts and in approval processes related to exploration, mine planning or development, ensuring decisions reflect contemporary environmental standards and community expectations.

Shire of Mundaring will provide further updates as they become available.
