Chidlow

DFES planned burn: Old Northam Road and Thornwick Crescent, Chidlow

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) is planning to conduct a fuel reduction burn between Old Northam Road and Thornwick Crescent, Chidlow.

Proposed timing: September to October 2026. The exact date will depend on suitable weather and operational conditions.

Planned burning reduces natural fuel loads and helps lower the risk posed by bushfires. The burn will be conducted by DFES staff with support from Shire of Mundaring Fire Control Officers and local volunteer brigades.

Smoke may be visible in surrounding areas during and after the burn. The site may continue to smoulder for several days and will be monitored following the burn.

STATUS
The Shire of Mundaring is planning a low-intensity burn during the September–October 2026 school holiday period. The exact date will depend on suitable weather and operational conditions, and the burn may be postponed at short notice.

The works will be undertaken by Shire of Mundaring Fire Control Officers and local volunteer brigades. Planned burning reduces natural fuel loads and helps lower the risk posed by bushfires to Chidlow Primary School, neighbouring properties and the surrounding community. Identified habitat trees, nest boxes, services and other environmental values will be protected.

Lilydale Road will be fully closed between Stone Street and Northcote Street while burning is underway. Traffic management, detours and warning signage will be in place.

Smoke may be visible in Chidlow and surrounding areas, and the site may continue to smoulder for several days. Please take care on nearby roads and follow all traffic-management and emergency-services directions.

WORKS TYPE:
- Reduction of bushfire fuel loads around the Darlington Playgroup building using forestry mulching.
- Forestry mulching will be used to maintain the existing firebreak and establish a treated buffer extending approximately 20 metres from the edge of the firebreak around the building.
- Forestry mulching uses specialised machinery to cut and process vegetation into mulch. The mulch will generally be retained close to ground level to help leave the treated area in a stable condition.
- Some incidental disturbance to surrounding vegetation may occur due to machinery access and the nature of the works. Contractors will take reasonable care to minimise unnecessary impacts and retain healthy native vegetation where practicable.
- The site contains areas with different dieback status. The works will be undertaken during dry conditions, with appropriate dieback hygiene and access requirements applied to reduce the risk of dieback spread.

- Reduction of bushfire fuel loads through the removal of woody weeds using hand-operated cutting equipment and a tracked chipper.

- Due to the density of the woody weed infestation and the access required for machinery, some incidental disturbance to surrounding vegetation may occur. Mt Helena 

Horace Street and Sawyers Road (Access Way)

WORKS TYPE:
- Reduction of bushfire fuel loads and management of invasive vegetation within the pedestrian access way.
- Between Horace Street and the creek line, non-native Tasmanian Blue Gum trees will be removed, including their stumps. These trees produce and shed large amounts of leaves, bark and other debris, creating a substantial layer of combustible material beneath them.
- Removing the trees and stumps will help reduce the ongoing accumulation of this material and lower fuel loads within the pedestrian access way.
- Between the creek line and Sawyers Road, vegetation will be under-pruned to improve clearance, and invasive weed species will be removed using forestry mulching.
- Forestry mulching uses specialised machinery to cut and process vegetation into mulch close to ground level.
- Some incidental disturbance to surrounding vegetation may occur due to tree removal, stump removal, machinery access and the nature of the works. Contractors will take reasonable care to minimise unnecessary impacts and leave the site tidy and stable.
