Fires and emergencies

For all fires and emergencies call 000.

Current burning period

On 1 June we entered the UNRESTRICTED burning period.

A Permit to Burn is not required during the UNRESTRICTED burning period.

When burning, please ensure:

  • The fire is properly contained within a mineral earth firebreak
  • A suitable water supply is readily available to extinguish it if required
  • Smoke is managed to avoid impacting roads and neighbouring properties.

All burning periods (indicative only)

There are three burning periods in the Shire of Mundaring.

Prohibited burning - December to March

All burning, including the burning of garden refuse, is prohibited during this period.

If you see someone burning during the Prohibited Burning Period, call Triple Zero (000).

Burning period dates may be varied due to climate or weather conditions. Any changes will be advertised on this website, in local newspapers and on the Shire's Facebook page.

Restricted burning - April, May, October and November

One pile of garden refuse, up to 1 square metre in size, may be burnt between 6pm and 11pm without a permit, provided all of the following conditions are met:

  • Only one pile is burnt at a time
  • The fire is completely extinguished by midnight, with no remaining heat, smoke, steam or white ash
  • An adequate water supply is available and capable of reaching the fire and surrounding area if the fire escapes
  • An able-bodied adult is present at all times while the fire is burning.

Burning is not permitted if:

  • The Fire Danger Rating is High or above
  • Wind speeds exceed 15km/h.

Any burning outside these conditions requires a Permit to Burn.

Unrestricted burning

A Permit to Burn is not required during the Unrestricted Burning Period.

However, you should exercise caution, ensure fires are properly controlled, and take steps to minimise smoke nuisance to neighbours and road users.

Fire Danger Ratings (Swan Inland North)

The Fire Danger Rating tells you how dangerous a fire would be if one started.

Ratings are forecast by the Bureau of Meteorology, based on weather and other environmental conditions such as fuel load.

  • Moderate: Plan and prepare
  • High: Be ready to act
  • Extreme: Take action now to protect life and property
  • Catastrophic: For your survival, leave bushfire risk areas.

There will be no rating level for days where no action is required.

Shire of Mundaring’s fire weather district falls within the Swan Inland North weather district.

The weather district starts from the Kalamunda/Mundaring border and extends north, finishing between Regans Ford and Red Gully.

Visit the DFES website to learn more about fire danger ratings.

Total Fire Bans (TFBs)

A Total Fire Ban is declared on days when fires are most likely to threaten lives and property. This is because of predicted extreme fire weather or when there are already widespread fires, and firefighting resources are stretched.

Occasionally, Total Fire Bans may be declared outside of a fire season (such as in May or June) due to other factors such as higher temperatures and expected strong winds preceding a storm front.

When a Total Fire Ban is active, it is illegal to light an open-air fire or conduct any activity that could start a fire. The DFES website provides mor information on prohibited activities.

View list of prohibited activities

Some of these activities are prescribed in the Bush Fires Regulations 1954, meaning they can be carried out during a Total Fire Ban, provided you comply with the conditions listed.

Businesses, public authorities or industries may be given an exemption for activities not prescribed in the Regulations, as long as conditions are met to ensure the activity does not start a fire.

Learn more about Total Fire Bans on the DFES website.

Harvest and Vehicle Movement Bans

Harvest and Vehicle Movement Bans are issued by the Shire of Mundaring's Chief Bush Fire Control Officer when the Grassland Fire Behaviour Index reaches a level that significantly increases the risk of fire. These bans restrict the use of engines, vehicles, plant and machinery that may ignite a fire during certain times of the day.

When a ban is in place, information will be published here on the Shire's website, social media channels, SMS notifications and the Fire and Burning Information Line.
