Current burning period

We are currently in a RESTRICTED BURNING period, effective Wednesday, 1 October to Sunday, 30 November, unless advised otherwise.

Burning periods (indicative only)

The Shire of Mundaring has three burning periods for fire management.

Restricted burning - April, May, October and November

One (1) pile of garden refuse, up to 1 square metre in size, may be burnt between 6 pm and 11 pm without a permit, but only if all of the following conditions are met:

  • Only one pile may be burnt at a time.
  • The fire must be completely extinguished by midnight. This means no heat, smoke, steam, or white ash should remain.
  • An adequate water supply must be available and capable of reaching the pile, and beyond, in case the fire escapes.
  • An able-bodied adult must be present at all times while the fire is burning.

Burning is not allowed if:

  • The Fire Danger Rating is High or above, or
  • The wind speed exceeds 15 km/h.

Any burning outside of these conditions requires a Permit to Burn.

Unrestricted burning

No permits required. Exercise caution and manage smoke nuisance.

Prohibited burning - December, January, February and March

All burning, including garden refuse, is prohibited during this period. If you see someone burning during the Prohibited Period, please phone Triple Zero (000).

Burning period dates may be varied due to climate or weather conditions. Variations will be advertised here, in local newspapers and the Shire's Facebook page.

Fire Danger Ratings (Swan Inland North)

The Fire Danger Rating tells you how dangerous a fire would be if one started.

From September 2022, the Fire Danger Rating system changed to a new Australian Fire Danger Rating System nationally backed up by a new Fire Behaviour Index (FBI) across Australia.

Ratings are forecast by the Bureau of Meteorology, based on weather and other environmental conditions such as fuel load.

  • Moderate: Plan and prepare
  • High: Be ready to act
  • Extreme: Take action now to protect life and property
  • Catastrophic: For your survival, leave bushfire risk areas.

There will be no rating level for days where no action is required.

Shire of Mundaring’s fire weather district falls within the Swan Inland North weather district. The new weather district starts from the Kalamunda/Mundaring border and extends north, finishing between Regans Ford and Red Gully.

Visit DFES for more information.

Total Fire Bans (TFBs)

A Total Fire Ban (TFB) is declared on days when fires are most likely to threaten lives and property. This is because of predicted extreme fire weather or when there are already widespread fires, and firefighting resources are stretched.

Occasionally, TFBs may be declared outside of a fire season (such as in May or June) due to other factors such as higher temperatures and expected strong winds preceding a storm front.

On a Total Fire Ban day, it is illegal to light an open-air fire or conduct any activity that could start a fire. You can find the full list of prohibited activities below. Some of these activities are prescribed in the Bush Fires Regulations 1954, meaning they can be carried out during a TFB, provided you comply with the conditions listed here.

Businesses, public authorities or industries may be given an exemption for activities not prescribed in the Regulations, as long as conditions are met to ensure the activity does not start a fire. Further information can be found by clicking here

Harvest and Vehicle Movement Bans

Harvest and Vehicle Movement Bans are issued by the Shire of Mundaring's Chief Bush Fire Control Officer and put in place when the Fire Behaviour Index for Grassland reaches a threshold. This threshold identifies the use of engines, vehicles, plants, or machinery that largely increases the likelihood of it starting a fire during particular times of the day. When a ban is imposed, this information will be available through social media, SMS notification, a banner on the website and the Fire and Burning Information line.

Lake Leschenaultia

Public access to Lake Leschenaultia is assessed regularly during the summer to align with Fire Danger Ratings.

The lake will now remain open on days when the FBI is below 60. If the FBI is in the range of 60 - 74, West Beach, along with the mountain bike and walking trails, will be closed, with the main beach remaining open. If it is forecast that the FBI is over 75 or above, the lake will be closed. These partial or full closures will be communicated

If the rating is catastrophic, the lake will be closed to the public and campers.
