Shire of Mundaring is proud to congratulate former Coordinator of Aquatic Facilities Chris Blankley on receiving the Smith–Robertson Award at the 2026 Aquatic and Recreation Industry Awards, recognising his outstanding contribution to Western Australia's aquatic industry.
Chris's journey began at Bilgoman Pool in 1976 as a lifeguard before progressing to Pool Manager and later spending almost 30 years leading the Shire's aquatic facilities. Throughout his career, he became a respected leader, mentor and advocate for the industry, helping shape aquatic safety, training and professional development across Western Australia.
Beyond his role with the Shire, Chris served on the Leisure Institute of Western Australia (LIWA) Board for 34 years, including 10 years as Vice President. He also dedicated decades to training and mentoring aquatic professionals, many of whom now lead facilities across the state.
His influence also extends beyond the state. Chris contributed to the development of the Watch Around Water program, assisted with the review of Australian Standard AS 2927 relating to the storage and handling of chlorine gas, and represented the industry at state, national and international forums.
Even in retirement, Chris continues to support both the Shire and the aquatic industry through volunteer work, including assisting with LIWA's regional seminars. His ongoing commitment reflects the same generosity, passion and dedication that have defined his career.
The Shire also congratulates Bilgoman Aquatic Centre, which was nominated for the Community Impact Award. The nomination recognises the centre's ongoing contribution to recreation, water safety, health and community connection in the Perth Hills.
Chris's well-deserved recognition, alongside Bilgoman's nomination, highlights the importance of our aquatic facilities and the people who help make them a vital part of our community. We thank Chris for his extraordinary service and congratulate everyone involved in this outstanding achievement.
