Community members came together on Sunday, 9 August 2026 for Shire of Mundaring’s first Dying to Know Expo, exploring end-of-life planning, grief and final wishes in a safe, welcoming and positive setting.
The Expo encouraged local people to talk openly about a topic that can often feel difficult, while connecting them with practical information, support services and people who could help.
Held as part of the national Dying to Know campaign, the local event helped people feel more comfortable starting meaningful conversations about death, dying and grief, and showed the value of community connection when planning for the future.
Throughout the day, presenters and exhibitors shared stories, practical advice and services in a way that supported open, respectful and positive conversations.
This year’s theme, ‘Nobody Knows’, encouraged attendees to think about the wishes, values and conversations they may want to share with the people closest to them.
Attendees took part in speaker sessions and explored an exhibition area featuring end-of-life service providers, live music, vintage and Harley Davidson hearses, and a local artist painting a cardboard casket.
Shire President Paige McNeil said it was wonderful to see community members engaging positively with a topic many people can find difficult to talk about.
“By bringing people together in a warm and respectful environment, the Expo helped make end-of-life conversations feel more approachable and showed people where they can find information, support and services,” President McNeil said.
Presenters and exhibitors generously donated their time to support the community with warmth, understanding and practical guidance.
Master of Ceremonies Julie Carlton shared her passion for normalising conversations around death and dying, encouraging people to make informed choices about end-of-life planning.
The Shire thanks everyone who attended, presented and exhibited, and acknowledges the community members who helped make the first Dying to Know Expo a thoughtful, respectful and meaningful local event.
