Council backs advocacy to protect Mundaring Weir Catchment Area

Shire of Mundaring is continuing its advocacy to protect the Mundaring Weir Catchment Area from future mining and exploration, reflecting how strongly the community values its unique natural environment.

Council has supported Member for Kalamunda Adam Hort MLA in advocating to the State Government for Mining Avoidance Zones to provide greater protection for the Mundaring Weir Catchment Area.

The proposed zones would identify areas to be protected from future exploration, drilling, mining and associated infrastructure, providing greater certainty about where these activities can and cannot occur.

The advocacy builds on Alcoa Australia’s 2025 decision to remove areas within the Shire from its proposed exploration drilling plans in the northern jarrah forest, following community and stakeholder feedback.

Council welcomed that decision at the time but made clear its advocacy would continue, recognising that other companies could seek access in the future. Supporting advocacy for Mining Avoidance Zones is a further step towards securing greater protection for the Mundaring Weir Catchment Area.

Shire President Paige McNeil said Council would continue to advocate strongly for the protection of the area.

“The Mundaring Weir Catchment Area is an incredibly valuable environmental asset. It is home to the world’s only jarrah forest, along with important waterways and significant biodiversity.

“Our community has been very clear about wanting to protect this environment. Council shares that commitment, and we have a responsibility to keep advocating strongly on its behalf.

“Supporting this advocacy is another step towards securing greater protection for the Mundaring Weir Catchment Area and safeguarding its water security for future generations.”

Council is supporting Mr Hort in advocating for publicly mapped Mining Avoidance Zones as a further measure to protect the environment and water security of the Mundaring Weir Catchment Area.
