Djilba, usually recognised through August and September, is a season of transition across Noongar Country including the Perth Hills. Cool, wet days still arrive but the first warmth begins to return and Country responds with fresh growth. Wattles brighten the bushland, orchids and other wildflowers emerge and balga flower spikes begin to rise.

Here’s our landcare tips for the season:

• Check new plantings: Djilba is a good time to replace failed seedlings, firm guards and stakes, and plan follow-up watering before warmer weather arrives.
• Stay ahead of weeds: Hand-pull or carefully treat small winter weeds before they flower and set seed, especially around revegetation areas and creeklines.
• Protect fragile soils: After winter rain, check tracks, slopes and drainage lines for erosion and slow runoff with mulch, logs, rocks or dense local native groundcovers.
• Support nesting wildlife: Avoid heavy pruning, clearing or disturbance where birds are nesting, and keep pets away from active habitat areas.
• Plan for spring growth: Keep an eye out for emerging wildflowers and native seedlings and avoid accidental trampling or spraying of desirable regeneration.
