More than 460 new street trees to grow Shire of Mundaring’s canopy

More than 460 new street trees will be planted across the Shire of Mundaring over the next two years, helping to grow tree canopy and create greener, cooler streets and neighbourhoods.

The project is being made possible with $180,998 from the WA Government’s WA Tree Recovery Local Government Grant Program. The program supports local governments to increase tree canopy and strengthen resilience to future tree loss, including the potential impacts of polyphagous shot-hole borer.

The Shire’s natural environment and leafy streetscapes are highly valued by the community, with the protection and growth of tree canopy an important part of maintaining the character and amenity of communities across the district.

Planting will focus on areas with lower canopy cover and greater exposure to urban heat, helping to provide more shade while creating habitat for local wildlife and strengthening the Shire’s tree canopy into the future.

Shire President Paige McNeil said the project reflected a priority that our community has consistently championed.

“Our community has made it clear that protecting and enhancing the natural environment is our biggest priority. The unique biodiversity of the Perth Hills is a defining part of what makes our area so special. Planting more than 460 new street trees is a significant investment in growing our tree canopy, creating more shade, supporting native flora and fauna, and helping keep communities across the Shire greener and cooler."

The new trees will build on work already happening across the Shire to grow and care for tree canopy, from street tree planting and revegetation to the management of parks and reserves and the provision of thousands of seedlings to the community.

Planting will be delivered over the next two years, with more information about locations and timing to be shared with the community as the project rolls out.

This project is proudly supported by the WA Government and delivered by the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation through the WA Tree Recovery Program.
