Shire of Mundaring is proud to support the Owl Friendly initiative and is encouraging residents to take action to help protect our local birdlife.
Australia’s native birds, wildlife and even family pets are being poisoned by Second-generation Anticoagulant Rodenticides (SGARs), a highly toxic class of rat poisons still readily available in supermarkets and online. These poisons move through the food chain, meaning owls and other birds of prey can be fatally affected after consuming contaminated rodents.
Through the Owl Friendly initiative, communities are advocating for safer alternatives and greater awareness of the impacts of SGARs on our environment. Advocacy groups are also calling for all SGARs to be removed from public sale. SGARs are already banned or heavily restricted in many countries including the US, Canada and the UK.
Owls play a vital role in maintaining ecological balance by naturally controlling rodent populations. Protecting them helps safeguard the health of our broader ecosystem across the Hills.
Residents can show their support by making a submission calling for stronger action on SGARs. Submissions do not need to be long but ideally should be unique and include any lived experience. Owl Friendly have a great guide here, if you need support with your submission. Submission must be made before 16 March 2026.
Make a submission to protect Aussie birds from lethal SGAR rat poisons
Together, we can help create a safer environment for our native wildlife and ensure the Shire remains a place where owls — and all native species — can thrive.
