The Shire of Mundaring has secured almost $890,000 in State Government funding to deliver an extensive program of bushfire mitigation works across the Perth Hills. 

Through the 2026/27 Round 1 Bushfire Mitigation Activity Fund, the Shire has been awarded $888,546.84 to undertake 44 bushfire mitigation treatments across 18 locations.  

The funding allocation is the largest awarded to any local government in Western Australia through this round of the program. 

The funding forms part of more than $5.1 million being distributed to 41 local governments across Western Australia to reduce bushfire risk on State-owned land through activities such as fuel reduction, firebreak maintenance and other mitigation works. 

Shire President Paige McNeil said the funding would deliver important risk reduction works in one of Western Australia's most bushfire-prone regions. 

"The Shire of Mundaring is one of the most bushfire-prone local government areas in Western Australia, so investment in proactive mitigation is critical to protecting our community," President McNeil said. 

"This funding will allow us to undertake a significant program of works designed to reduce fuel loads, improve access for firefighting crews and help protect residents, homes, businesses and important community infrastructure." 

President McNeil thanked the State Government and Emergency Services Minister David Michael for supporting bushfire mitigation efforts across the Perth Hills. 

The funding builds on previous Bushfire Mitigation Activity Fund programs that have supported fuel reduction and access improvement projects across the district. 

President McNeil said the Shire would continue to work closely with the Department of Fire and Emergency Services, local volunteer bushfire brigades and other stakeholders to deliver effective bushfire risk management outcomes. 

"Delivering 44 mitigation treatments across 18 locations will be a significant undertaking, and I thank our Emergency Management team, volunteer brigades and partners who will help make this important work possible." 

"Bushfire preparedness is a shared responsibility, and mitigation remains one of the most effective ways to reduce the impact of future fires. This funding will help ensure we can continue taking practical action to safeguard our community and environment." 

The following treatments are planned for delivery during the 2026–2027 financial year. 

*Mechanical works methods include slashing (mowing of understorey and grasses), mulching (cutting and grinding of vegetation which is then left as a layer of mulch on the soil surface) and pruning (cutting back selected branches or vegetation to maintain clearance and reduce fuel loads).
