New opportunities are being explored to support people with disability to get involved in cricket in the Hills, with Sport4All working alongside WA Cricket to strengthen inclusive opportunities for local clubs and their communities.
Sport4All Inclusion Coach Michael Bourgault du Coudray recently connected with WA Cricket to better understand the inclusive programs, resources and participation pathways available and how these can support cricket clubs within the Shire of Mundaring.
This collaboration forms part of Sport4All’s broader approach across Western Australia, connecting with State Sporting Associations to complement the work of Inclusion Coaches at a local level. By bringing together sport-specific expertise with Sport4All’s focus on inclusion, local clubs can be better supported to build their confidence and capability to welcome people with disability.
For cricket, this includes opportunities such as StarBlast, an adapted version of Cricket Blast for children aged 5–12 with disability, as well as the Integrated Cricket League for older players. These programs can provide opportunities for people with disability to participate in cricket and connect into broader participation pathways.
For Michael, who grew up in the Hills, helping create these connections locally is particularly meaningful.
“Sport had a huge impact on me growing up in the Hills, and I’m proud to now be supporting our local clubs to create more opportunities for people who may not have previously felt that sport was for them. Everyone should have the opportunity to participate, and by connecting clubs with the right support, programs and pathways, we can help make that possible,” Michael said.
Through Sport4All, Michael will continue working with local sporting clubs and community organisations across the Shire of Mundaring to help them become more welcoming and inclusive of people with disability.
