The Bilgoman Aquatic Centre's Diving Lady has been a symbol of summer in the Perth Hills for over 40 years and now the community has the opportunity to officially name her.
To celebrate her new SunSmart look, Shire of Mundaring is running a naming competition over the summer, with the winning name to be announced at the Bilgoman Back to School Wave Rave on 30 January.
The Shire is calling on the community to submit a name that reflects her story and spirit to go into the draw to win a Family Pool Pass and a Swim and Survive prize pack thanks to Royal Life Saving.
Shire President Paige McNeil said the Darlington-based aquatic centre icon evokes a nostalgic response in many locals.
“Bilgoman Aquatic Centre holds a special place in the hearts of many Hills residents,” President McNeil said.
"Whether you learnt to swim at the centre as a child or simply “hung out” with your mates in the summer school holidays, the Diving Lady has accompanied many decades of memories made at the pool.
"She has undergone a few facelifts since the pool opened in 1968, but we are particularly proud of her latest SunSmart look to promote healthy sun safe habits to the community.”
President McNeil said the Shire was looking for a name that celebrates the community culture and facility identity.
"We are looking for a name that is positive, family-friendly and appropriate for all ages. It will also promote positive SunSmart habits and be reflective of the spirit of Bilgoman and summer in the Hills.”
A small panel consisting of the Shire President, Shire CEO, Manager of Recreation Services and Bilgoman Duty Manager will select three shortlisted names from the community's submissions. The public will then be invited to vote on their favourite shortlisted name online and at Shire Facilities including Bilgoman Aquatic Centre and the Mundaring Library.
Submissions open on 15 December and will remain open until 4 January: https://forms.office.com/r/sdkrZaPvs9
