Finding balance in the Hills: Greg’s Chair Yoga journey

When Greg came across Shire of Mundaring’s Celebrating Seniors Program, he was simply looking for something different to try.

“I saw the Seniors Program by the Shire. It had Chair Yoga and colouring Mandalas and a walk around Lake Leschenaultia and I thought, oh that looks OK, I’ll give that a go.”

The Chair Yoga session with Stone’s Throw Yoga proved to be a turning point.

“I think I’m prone to becoming isolated socially. But when I was out amongst it, I really enjoyed it. It was great fun. The people running it were very knowledgeable and it was very well organised.”

Now 75, Greg says he had been “really feeling my age” before discovering yoga. “But since finding the yoga sessions I feel invigorated.”

Chair Yoga offers a gentle, accessible way to build strength, posture and balance – and Greg says the difference has been both physical and mental.

“It’s really given me a social outlet and my health has improved. There’s an emphasis on balance and posture and all of that feels like it has improved. It’s given me more confidence to walk in and out of town.”

“It feels easy. I think this may be the first thing I’ve ever done in my life that didn’t feel really hard… But this feels easy physically and mentally. It’s just a gorgeous experience.”

Greg also credits the practice with helping him feel more relaxed.

“I think it’s helped my mental health. I’ve noticed I’m able to relax a lot quicker now. I wish I had of learnt this skill a lot earlier.”

He says none of it would have happened without Shire’s initiative.

“If it wasn’t for the Shire’s program, I would not have ever done yoga. In fact, I would have laughed at yoga previously but now I’m a convert! I’m very grateful for the opportunity… It was a wonderful initiative by the Shire.”
