Shire of Mundaring has unveiled an early look at the proposed interior of the new Perth Hills Mundaring Visitor Centre and District Museum, offering a glimpse of how local stories, history and culture will come to life within the Mundaring Cultural Hub.
The Cultural Hub represents a major step in the broader revitalisation of the Mundaring town centre, helping create a vibrant cultural and community heart that brings people together, supports local businesses and strengthens Mundaring as a destination for visitors to the Perth Hills. The project has previously been positioned as a cornerstone of the Shire’s broader Town Centre Revitalisation.
At the heart of that vision will be the new Perth Hills Mundaring Visitor Centre and District Museum, bringing the Shire’s existing Visitor Centre and Museum together in a contemporary space designed to celebrate what makes Mundaring unique.
The development of the Cultural Hub has been informed by extensive community engagement over a number of years, helping shape the vision and priorities for the project.
As the project moves into delivery, the Shire is working with specialist exhibition and interpretation consultants Impeller, alongside the Visitor Centre team and Mundaring & Hills Historical Society, to develop the internal layout, exhibition spaces, stories and overall visitor experience.
The project team is also working closely with the Aboriginal Reference Group to help shape the Noongar history and cultural displays within the facility, ensuring these elements are developed with guidance from local Aboriginal representatives and reflect the significance of Country and local cultural heritage.
Shire President Paige McNeil said the new Perth Hills Mundaring Visitor Centre and District Museum was an important part of the bigger vision for Mundaring.
“This is about creating a place that feels distinctly Mundaring, somewhere that celebrates our stories, our culture and our connection to the Perth Hills,” President McNeil said.
“The Cultural Hub is the first major step in a broader transformation of the Mundaring town centre, creating a vibrant place for our community while strengthening Mundaring as a destination for visitors.
“Our community has helped shape the vision for the Cultural Hub over many years, and it’s exciting to now see that vision moving closer to reality.”
The current concept includes a mix of interactive displays, digital experiences and museum exhibits exploring themes including Aboriginal history and culture, Mundaring Weir and the Golden Pipeline, railways and personal stories, war and local industry, heritage trails, local history and key landmarks.
A purpose-built darkroom is also proposed as part of the visitor experience, creating an immersive environment for storytelling, interpretation and digital displays.
The sketches released today provide an early look at how these elements could come together as detailed design and planning progresses.
The Cultural Hub will ultimately bring together the Perth Hills Mundaring Visitor Centre and District Museum with a contemporary library, art galleries and workshop spaces, community and civic spaces, a café, meeting rooms and flexible-use areas.
Positioned opposite Sculpture Park, the Hub will become a central destination for community life and an important part of the broader revitalisation of the Mundaring town centre, supporting culture, connection and new opportunities for tourism and local businesses.
