Future Mundaring launches a new community conversation

Shire of Mundaring is launching Future Mundaring, a long-term community conversation about the future of the places we call home.

The conversation begins next week with community workshops across the Shire, giving residents the first opportunity to share what they value, what they would like to see improved and what their communities may need in the years ahead.

Future Mundaring will bring together a range of important projects and conversations over the coming years, including Place Plans and other strategic initiatives affecting communities across the Hills, Foothills and Rural areas. Rather than asking residents to navigate a series of separate plans and consultations, it will create one recognisable pathway for people to understand what is being considered, contribute their ideas and see how community feedback informs future decisions.

The first workshops will explore two broad questions:

  • What kind of communities do we want to create?
  • What infrastructure, services and facilities will our future communities need?

Feedback gathered through these initial workshops will help inform the development of Place Plans. These plans will identify what matters most for communities and help guide future thinking about local infrastructure, services, facilities, public spaces and community development opportunities.

The place planning approach was identified as a priority in the Shire's 2024-2034 Council Plan, recognising that the needs and aspirations across the Hills, Foothills and Rural areas are not always the same and should be reflected in future planning and decision-making.

Shire President Paige McNeil said Future Mundaring would create more opportunities for residents to help shape the places they know best.

“One of the things I love most about our Shire is that every region has its own character. What matters to people out in rural Wooroloo may be different from what matters in the hills of Mundaring, or the foothills of Swan View, and that is why these local conversations are so important.

“Our community is full of passionate and knowledgeable people who care deeply about where they live. These workshops are an opportunity to tell us what you value, what you would like to see improved and what you want future generations to experience in the Shire of Mundaring.

“This is the beginning of a longer conversation about the future of the places we call home. I encourage residents to come along to a workshop, share what matters most to them and help shape the priorities that will guide future plans and decisions across our communities.”

Chief Executive Officer Jason Whiteaker said the workshops would provide an important foundation for future Place Plans.

“Place planning starts by listening. These workshops give residents an early opportunity to identify local priorities and help us better understand the different strengths, needs and opportunities across our communities.

“Whether your priority is parks, trails, community facilities, recreation opportunities, local services or protecting the character of your area, we want to hear from you.”
