Kambarang landcare tips

As the Noongar season of Kambarang brings warmer weather, vibrant wildflower displays, and an abundance of new life, it's a great time for residents to take positive action for local biodiversity and prepare for the months ahead.

  • Plant local native species to provide food and habitat for pollinators, birds, and other wildlife.
  • Provide water for wildlife, a shallow dish of fresh water with a few rocks or sticks for safe access can be a lifeline for local wildlife, especially during hot and dry weather.  Check out ReWild for more ideas - Provide water for wildlife • ReWild Perth
  • Control emerging weeds before they flower and set seed, helping to protect native bushland. Access ‘Plants out of Place’ here online - plants-out-of-place
  • Mulch garden beds to conserve soil moisture as temperatures begin to rise.
  • Protect nesting birds by keeping pets under control and minimising disturbance around nesting areas.
  • Be snake aware as reptiles become more active. Keep long grass and debris away from homes and give wildlife plenty of space.
  • Check young plants and recent revegetation projects for signs of moisture stress and provide supplementary watering where required.
  • Admire wildflowers where they grow and stay on established tracks when exploring local bushland.

Prepare for the fire season

Kambarang is also an important time to start preparing for the warmer, drier months ahead.

  • Remove excess leaf litter, dry grass, and other flammable materials from around your home.
  • Prune trees and shrubs away from buildings and maintain access tracks.
  • Check hoses, pumps, and water supplies are in good working order.
  • Review your bushfire plan and discuss it with your household.
  • Balance fire preparedness with habitat protection by retaining native vegetation where safe to do so and seeking advice before undertaking major clearing.
