Our Vision

The Shire of Mundaring is working with neighbouring businesses, residents, community groups and the broader Chidlow community to select an appropriate barrier treatment to help protect the significant memorial trees along Memorial Avenue, Chidlow.

These trees are living memorials to local veterans and form an important part of Chidlow's heritage, identity and history. Installing a suitable barrier will help ensure Memorial Avenue remains an attractive and meaningful landmark for commemorative activities, community use and future generations.

Why This Project Matters

The memorial trees along Memorial Avenue are an important part of Chidlow's heritage, identity and history. As living memorials dedicated to local veterans, they play a significant role in commemorative activities and community life.

Following a request from the Chidlow Progress Association, supported by the Chidlow RSL, the Shire is exploring opportunities to install a protective barrier to help safeguard the trees' structural root zones and support their long-term health. Through community engagement, the project will identify a preferred treatment that balances tree protection, heritage values and the ongoing use of Memorial Avenue as an important community space.

Protecting the memorial trees will:

  • Safeguard living memorials dedicated to local veterans.
  • Reduce soil compaction and protect the trees' structural root zones.
  • Preserve Chidlow's heritage, identity and local character.
  • Maintain the amenity of Memorial Avenue as an important public space.
  • Support commemorative activities and community use.
  • Complement Chidlow's broader heritage and tourism priorities.

What’s Planned

Preliminary site investigations and measurements have been completed with support from the Shire's arborist.

This work confirmed that a barrier can be installed while:

  • Maintaining a minimum 3.5 metre clearance from the sealed road edge.
  • Avoiding encroachment into the trees' structural root zones.
  • Preserving access and functionality of the road reserve.

Several barrier options will be developed and presented to the community for consideration and feedback.

Potential options may include:

  • Rock Barrier: A natural rock barrier designed to discourage vehicle access while complementing the landscape character of Memorial Avenue. This option is considered achievable within the current project scope.
  • Bollards: A bollard treatment that provides clear delineation and protection of the trees. Should this option be preferred by the community, funding opportunities would need to be considered*
Or a combination of the two options to provide immediate protection

Community Engagement

The Shire is committed to working with the Chidlow community to help inform the future of Memorial Avenue and identify an appropriate barrier treatment to protect the memorial trees.

Community engagement will provide an opportunity for residents, businesses, community groups and interested stakeholders to review barrier options and provide feedback on their preferred approach. As part of the engagement process, the Shire will host a Barrier Selection Community Meeting, where community members will have the opportunity to discuss the proposed options and help identify a preferred treatment for Memorial Avenue.

Feedback received throughout the engagement process, including at the Barrier Selection Meeting, will help inform the preferred barrier treatment and guide the next stage of the project.
