Bushfire Mitigation
Bushfire mitigation works help reduce the potential impact of bushfire on people, property, infrastructure and the natural environment. These activities are undertaken by the Shire and partner agencies as part of a long-term approach to managing bushfire risk.
Mitigation works may include prescribed or hazard reduction burns, slashing, vegetation management, track maintenance, access improvements and other treatments designed to reduce available fuel and improve emergency access.
The type of treatment used depends on local conditions, environmental considerations and bushfire risk assessments. While mitigation works can sometimes cause temporary inconvenience, they play an important role in reducing the likelihood and impact of large bushfires.

Current and Planned Mitigation Works
A range of mitigation activities are undertaken across the Shire each year to help reduce bushfire risk and improve community safety. These works may be delivered by the Shire, Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA), volunteer brigades or other partner organisations.

Public Land, Verges and Weed Management
Managing bushfire risk extends beyond private properties. The Shire undertakes a range of activities on land that it manages including public land, roadsides and reserves to help reduce bushfire risk and support a safer landscape.
These activities may include weed management, vegetation maintenance, verge treatments and the removal or control of species that contribute significantly to bushfire risk. Community members also have a role to play in managing vegetation on their properties and making informed decisions about plant selection.
