A Morning Tea with Folker Krueger

Past Event

Do you like travelling, different cultures, adventures, good food and wine? How about taking an imaginary flight in a glider or even a vintage Tiger Moth? Do you enjoy quiet moments to read short stories presented with a wry sense of humour?

If so, join Folker as he shares stories from his eventful life as a German immigrant who never stopped exploring what the world presented to him.

Born in Berlin "too many years ago", he left home at 19, never returning to live in the country of his birth. Working in Switzerland, England, Australia, Taiwan, Singapore, Hong Kong and Indonesia, Folker accumulated a wealth of experiences as he travelled the globe.

His latest book, Well Remembered represents a kaleidoscope of short stories from his eventful life.

Even though he experienced a lot of difficult periods, his unbeaten sense of humour always got him through. The stories in Well Remembered - the comical, the sad, the bizarre, and even the everyday - are told with a wry and touching sense of humour coloured with sharp observation.

Bookings are essential for this free event via Eventbrite. Light refreshments will be available. We suggest you bring your own keep-cup or mug for tea, coffee or water. Please let us know if you have any accessibility requirements.

Review

"After writing his memoir, The Lottery of Life, Krueger discovered he needed to share more stories, in this case a series of globe-trotting adventures, musings on retirement, and the realities of “the harsh world of doing business.” ...This collection of tales could easily be called Well Travelled since his work as a freight forwarder covered three continents, with stops in Indonesia, Australia, and Europe with stints in Jakarta, Perth, and Singapore...Krueger’s knowledge of dates, names, and events is remarkably detailed, and, thanks to his powerful memory and meticulous documentarian skills, stories from mid-century are narrated as if they happened yesterday.

He concludes with his epic adventure of learning to fly. His development of the finesse and skill it takes to achieve this dream is chronicled flight by flight, sometimes excitingly— “A weightless feeling in my stomach told me I was about to fall out of the sky”—and with the precision of detail you would expect from a pilot. Despite the perils, it’s gratifying to share the journey and insights." (Booklife Reviews, Publishers Weekly)
