Three amateur photographers from the Shire of Mundaring have been named winners of the Relics, Wrecks and Renos photo competition, proudly presented by Shire of Mundaring libraries and the Mundaring and Hills Historical Society.

Mark Hancock won the “Relics” category for his image captured in Wooroloo, titled ‘An Old Crossing Water Way’ and was praised for being balanced in its composition.

Nicole Wilkins’ 2018 image of Milperra Cottage in Mount Helena earned her the “Renos” category. The cottage was originally the headmaster’s residence for the Lion Mill School.

The building later became a Playgroup and is now a part of the Rise Network and called Milperra Cottage.

Meanwhile, Rhys Hall took home top prize in the “Wrecks” category for his image of the Lacey Road Ruins in Parkerville. The ruins were said to be old convict ruins but were most likely an early hills cottage.

Shire President Paige McNeil said the winners had captured the essence of the shire’s rich heritage.

“Thank you to everyone who participated in this year’s competition. The standard of entries was outstanding which made judging very difficult,” she said.

“Congratulations to Mark, Nicole and Rhys! Their photographs stand as testament to the power of storytelling through the lens and will help capture the past and present eras for the Mundaring and Hills and Historical Society’s photographic collection.”

The competition was judged by Dr Helen Brash, Shire President Paige McNeil and Mr Ian Chills, who praised the winning photographs for their composition and ability to draw the eye.

The photographers chose a diversity of sites and buildings, both familiar and forgotten, but captured for future generations to see.

Images on display at Mundaring and Hills and Historical Society Museum

This year’s competition attracted many entries, of which 10 will be on display at the Mundaring and Hills and Historical Society Museum following the launch of the “We’ve Got Balls” exhibition at 4.30pm on Wednesday 29 November.

The winners will also be presented with a $100 voucher at a presentation evening following the launch of the exhibition on Wednesday 29 November.
