Shire committed to reconciliation this National Reconciliation Week

Shire of Mundaring is proud to share its commitment to reconciliation in the shire and the steps it has taken since its Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) was adopted in 2022.

This National Reconciliation Week (NRW) will see the Shire take steps to raise awareness of reconciliation in its workplace and local Aboriginal community.

This years’ theme ‘Be a Voice for this Generation,’ encourages Australians to be a voice for reconciliation in tangible ways – which is in line with the Shire’s actions outlined in the RAP.

Shire's Commitment to Reconciliation

Shire President James Martin said since the RAP was endorsed at Council, the Shire has been actively implementing actions towards reconciliation.

“Some of the actions we have implemented so far include translating our Acknowledgement of Country from English to Noongar,” he said.

“We have also consulted with local Aboriginal peoples on the proposed Mundaring Multi-Purpose Community Facility, and increased staff knowledge and understanding of the Uluru Statement from the Heart.

“These actions are in-line with Reconciliation Australia’s call for Australians to be a voice for reconciliation in tangible ways in their everyday lives.”

As this is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements, the Shire will be using this week to promote reconciliation.

One such way is through sharing stories at a scheduled morning tea with a NRW theme for the families who use the Shire’s Family and Children’s Services at Swan Parent and Child Centre, Middle Swan.

In addition to the morning tea, there will be face painting, an Aboriginal dance group and didgeridoo performance, story time and yarning.

National Reconciliation Week

National Reconciliation Week runs from Saturday 27 May to Saturday 3 June each year.

These dates commemorate two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey - the successful 1967 referendum, and the High Court Mabo decision in 1992, which paved the way for Native Title.
