Shire of Mundaring secures funding to address bushfire risks

Bushfire mitigation works are set to commence across the shire in the coming months following the receipt of a Mitigation Activity Fund Grant from the State Government’s Mitigation Activity Fund Grants Program (MAFGP).

The $500,000 grant will be used to conduct bushfire mitigation treatments at Lake Leschenaultia, Chidlow and Stoneville.

Shire President James Martin thanked the State Government for the grant.

“The grant supports Local Governments who have an endorsed Bushfire Risk Management Plan to treat bushfire risk on State land that local governments manage within their communities,” he said.

“Living in the Shire of Mundaring, we all know that there is a potential risk of bushfires.

“However, measures can be taken to minimise the impacts by reducing the risks that contribute to bushfires.

“The funding will assist the Shire in undertaking mitigation treatments such as, removing dead vegetation, pruning overhanging trees, clearing fire access ways, weed control and removal of non-native species to reduce fuel loads, along with community engagement.”

Mitigation works

In the coming months the Shire will carry out mitigation works by applying forestry mulching in the following areas:

  • Lake Leschenaultia (fire access track upgrades and trackside woody weed removal)
Old Northam Road, Liberton to Jason (roadside woody weed removal)
Stoneville Road, Bentley to Cameron (roadside woody weed removal)

Residents can assist with bushfire mitigation

Landowners and occupiers can also assist with bushfire mitigation by ensuring that appropriate treatments are implemented on their own land, meeting the requirements outlined in the Shire’s Firebreak and Fuel Load Notice.

“It is essential people living in areas of fire risk fully appreciate the nature of the risk they face and the actions available to them to mitigate that risk,” added Cr Martin.
