Shire of Mundaring to go FOGO

Shire of Mundaring residents will see a third bin service introduced to their waste services from 1 July 2024.

A Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) bin service was approved by Council at its Ordinary Council Meeting in August and will have broad environmental benefits by converting organic waste into compost.

Shire President James Martin said reducing landfilled food and garden organics was a major waste minimisation priority for national and state governments.

“The Shire is pleased to announce that we will be joining many state and national local governments and introducing FOGO to our waste services next financial year,” he said.

“Council has been working on implementing the third bin service since 2020, with the State Government encouraging local governments to take up the 3-bin system by 2025 to divert food waste from landfill.”

Food and garden organics represent the single largest fraction in a household garbage bin and have detrimental environmental impacts within the landfill environment.

The FOGO system will see residents receive a new 240L lime-green lidded bin for residents to separate their food organics and garden organics waste into which will be repurposed into compost.

The new FOGO bin will be collected weekly. The general 140L waste bin will also be changed to a red lid in line with the Waste Authority’s bin guidelines.

The general waste and yellow-lid recycling bins will be collected on alternative fortnights.

The cost for the third bin will be offset by the Better Bins Plus $310,800 grant from the Waste Authority.

In June, Council authorised the Shire’s CEO Jonathan Throssell to negotiate a Participants Agreement with EMRC which will be presented to Council for endorsement at a future meeting.
