Hoo wants to be owl friendly

Shire of Mundaring is pleased to launch a campaign aimed at protecting native owls from the detrimental effects of secondary poisoning caused by rodent baits. Secondary poisoning is a growing concern and affects not only the vulnerable owl population, but also poses risks to pets and other wildlife. Native owls in the region die tragically through consuming rodents that have ingested toxic baits. It is also very difficult for vets to save pets and other wildlife exposed to secondary poisoning when some types of rodenticide baits are used.

Shire President Paige McNeil said owls play a vital role in maintaining ecological balance.

“Protecting our native owls and preserving our ecosystem’s delicate balance is a shared responsibility. I invite residents to attend the information session on Saturday 2 December and collect a bumper sticker to help raise awareness of Owl-friendly Mundaring,” she said.

“We encourage all residents to join us in becoming owl-friendly and safeguarding our vulnerable wildlife."

Over the coming weeks, a series of key initiatives will raise awareness for owl-friendly practices amongst schools and local residents.

 These include:

  • To raise awareness and educate the community about the importance of owl-friendly practices. Shire of Mundaring will host a Hoo wants to be owl friendly talk featuring owl experts on Saturday 2 December from 9.30am to 11.30am at the Shire Administration Building.
  • Residents who wish to show their support for owls and local wildlife can obtain free owl-friendly Mundaring bumper stickers at the Mundaring Visitor Centre, Administration Building, and Shire libraries. Additionally, a wallet-friendly card is available as a handy reference for those purchasing rodent bait.
